10 Reasons to Buy a Real Tree This Christmas

Picture
The National Christmas Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) wants consumers to know some of the reasons to buy real trees as opposed to fake trees. They have provided material for the following 10 reasons to buy a real try.

1.    Real Christmas Trees are not cut from natural forests.

Christmas trees are crops, grown on farms and are planted and harvested       just like any other crop including fruits and vegetables. Someone plants a       Christmas Tree, and each year as they are harvested there is a pretty good       chance that the tree is replaced by at least one seedling.

2.     Buying a fake tree does not save a wild tree. Again, Christmas trees are crops.  The manufacture, shipping, and storage of fake trees, many of which come from places like China, have far more environmental impact and negative economic consequences, than buying a local farm grown tree does.  Don’t forget, fake trees come in cardboard boxes. That cardboard is made from trees, right?

3.     Real trees do not aggravate allergies in most people. While it is true that some people may have allergic reactions to tree sap, or pollen, this is rare and not very widespread.  Artificial trees, often stored in closets and attics can collect dust and mold.  Plastics used to manufacture artificial trees can off gas serious chemicals that can have negative health effects, especially in a house that is tightly zipped up for the winter.

4.     Real trees are biodegradable.  Artificial trees will eventually end up in a landfill.  Most communities have real tree recycling programs that turn the 100% biodegradable trees into mulch, and compost to erosion control.

5.     The cost of real trees is reasonable compared to the cost of an artificial tree. According to the NCTA the cost of a real tree ranges from between $15 and $200 depending on where you buy it. Artificial trees start at $50 and can be bought for well over $300.  If an artificial tree lasts an average of 5 years, you can do the comparative math.

6.     Real trees can be a fire and safety hazard but artificial trees are far from fireproof. According to the NCTA, a report issued by the National Fire Protection Association 28% of home fires caused by Christmas trees involved artificial trees.  Yes a real tree can catch fire.  But if you are careful, and use common sense by keeping the tree watered, maintaining proper electrical conditions, keeping open flames away form the tree, and putting the tree out for collection by the recyclers in an appropriate time frame (within a week of Christmas or sooner) you can bring the risk of fire down considerably. To be sure, this is serious business and fires can happen.

7.     Do real trees contain harmful chemicals and pesticides? To be sure many real trees have been treated with a fire retardant chemical. However most farmers will say that they don’t use pesticides.  Ask whoever is selling you the tree. The chemical soup in our homes should be a real concern to parents, but the off gassing chemicals of an artificial tree can be extremely dangerous.

8.     Buying a local real tree, whether you cut it yourself or not, is an investment in your local economy. Buying these trees supports local farms and farmers. Buy local is a critical strategy to improving and sustaining our WNY communities.

9.     Buying a real tree can be a fun outdoor adventure for the whole family. Go to u-cut it tree farm gets you outdoors, into the fresh air, and offers decent exercise.

10.Real trees smell good. Real good.
